The story behind

If you’ve ever waited for a letter that never arrived, Bo Cartero by El Cuarteto de Nos will sound like a catharsis. It’s not a song that evokes romantic nostalgia, but rather that moment when hope turns into a joke and the postman becomes the perfect scapegoat. The band takes the classic Please Mr. Postman by The Marvelettes —a song even The Beatles and The Carpenters covered— and gives it an absurd twist: the protagonist isn’t a lovestruck person, but someone obsessed with the idea that the postman will bring something, anything, as frustration builds with every verse. The result is a mix of catchy rhythm and ironic lyrics, where the mundane becomes caricature. If you’ve ever felt cheated by an empty mailbox, this song will make you laugh… or at least nod in solidarity.

The song was born in 1994, on Otra Navidad en las trincheras, the fifth album by El Cuarteto de Nos. That year, the band had already been playing in small venues for a decade, but this album catapulted them into the spotlight: blending black humor and lyrics that brutally depicted Montevideo, they found a sound that felt like Uruguayan rock with an international edge. The version they recorded in 2004 for their self-titled album gave it a second life, though without altering its essence. The music video, directed by Esteban Israel and filmed that same year, is a visual wink: Roberto Musso wanders through his home as if time had stopped, waiting for the postman who never arrives. It lasts 3 minutes and 56 seconds—just long enough for the joke to become contagious.
