The story behind

Sólo un rumor, according to DoReSol

The first time I heard Sólo un rumor, I was hooked by that air of mystery that floats from the very first seconds. It's not a song that hits you with a catchy chorus, but rather it wraps around you with a rhythm that dances between playfulness and unease, as if each note were whispering a half-truth. The lyrics, short but intense, play with the ambiguity of what is said and what is left unsaid—something that wasn't as common in Uruguayan rock in the nineties. Cuarteto de Nos had already been exploring that territory between the comic and the dark, but here they take it to another level: there are no moral lessons or easy conclusions, just the feeling of listening to something that could be true or pure invention.

The album Otra Navidad en las trincheras was released in 1994 under the label Ayuí / Tacuabé, and this track in particular marked a turning point in how the band approached their lyrics. They weren’t trying to sound like anyone else; instead, they wanted each song to have its own personality, even if that meant breaking with convention. The 3:51 runtime is just right for what it has to say: long enough for the story to unfold without a single wasted second. The result was an album that, unintentionally, became a benchmark of Uruguayan rock in that decade, with that blend of irony and rawness that defined them.
