The story behind

Au Revoir, according to DoReSol

OneRepublic pushed their pop-rock sound to the limit in Au Revoir, a track distinguished by its flawless structure and that melancholic air that wraps around every note. Clocking in at nearly five minutes, the song plays with subtle yet effective rhythm changes, where the drums and bass intertwine in a groove that doesn’t let go until the final chord. It’s not just another track from their album Native: here, the band makes the most of the space between verses to let the melody breathe, something few mainstream pop songs manage without losing their hook.

Recorded in Los Angeles with a small but precise team, Au Revoir was born during the Native sessions, an album the band planned to release in late 2012 but delayed to fine-tune details. The result was an album that, unintentionally, ended up dominating charts: its third single, Counting Stars, climbed to the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent weeks at number one in the United Kingdom. Yet Au Revoir stood out as a different kind of breath within the collection, a song where the production by Brent Kutzle —also an engineer— and the mixing by Ryan Lipman and Joe Zook give it that organic shine contrasting with the rest of the material. The band, formed in Colorado Springs in 2003 and later established in California, had already proven their ability to connect with global audiences, but here the approach was different: less explosive, more intimate.
