Blink-182 recorded Anthem in San Diego and Los Angeles, over a period of three months. It was part of the album Enema of the State, their third studio album. The group worked with Jerry Finn, who had previously been with Green Day. The song lasts six minutes and nine seconds. Enema of the State marked the debut of Travis Barker, who replaced Scott Raynor. The band already had some fame thanks to Dude Ranch, from 1997. The album was the first of Blink-182 on an international record label.
