The story behind
When Alejandro Sanz composed Amiga mía, the idea was to capture the depth of a friendship. The song was born from a real situation, inspired by his friend Irene Chamorro, who at the time felt a deep love for Antonio Flores. Producer Miguel Ángel Arenas, known as "El Capi", recounted in his book that Sanz sought to express that unbreakable connection between friends, describing it as a "declaration of friendship". However, his friend's initial reaction upon hearing the first part of the song was not what the singer-songwriter expected; she called it "intelligent" and "wise", which led Sanz to compose the second part as a kind of reproach for that cold appreciation. It was only upon hearing that "scolding" that she finally became emotional.
This track, included in his fourth studio album, Más, released in 1997, became a milestone for Alejandro Sanz. It was the first single of his career to reach the top of the U.S. Billboard Latin Pop Airplay chart, marking a turning point in his career. The production was handled by Miguel Ángel Arenas, along with Pedro Miguel Ledo and Emanuele Ruffinengo, who also took care of the arrangements. The music video, filmed in early 1998 on the Amalfi Coast, in Italy, featured actress Maria Mazza and was directed by Ambrogio Lo Giudice. In it, the scene is recreated where Sanz's music awakens his friend, who heads towards him, while local inhabitants react with surprise and anger to the serenade. The album Más, from which Amiga mía is taken, stood out for being the best-selling of Sanz's career and one of the most successful in the history of Spain.
