The story behind
Adore, according to DoReSol
The song Adore, the last on the 1987 double album *Sign o' the Times*, is presented as an extensive and detailed ballad. Its atmosphere is built on a slow, enveloping rhythm, with the prominent participation of Atlanta Bliss and Eric Leeds on brass. It is described as a piece that, while evoking the sweetness of ballads by groups like The Stylistics, maintains an unmistakably Prince identity. Despite not being released as a single, it had a notable radio presence and became a recurring part of his live performances. A four-minute edited version appeared on the 1993 compilation *The Hits/The B-Sides*, while the album *Girl 6* included the full version. In 2002, Prince offered a solo performance of Adore, accompanied only by piano, on his live album *One Nite Alone... Live!*.
The recording of Adore took place on November 19, 1986, at Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood, California. The track, composed and produced by Prince himself, is classified within the R&B and soul genres. Its legacy has been recognized in various lists: in 2009, Essence magazine included it among the "25 Best Slow Jams of All Time," and in 2010, AOL Radio listeners voted it Prince's second-best song. In 2016, it ranked 431st on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The influence of Adore extends to other productions; the song All That, from Carmen Electra's debut album, uses a sample taken from this piece.
