This work, by Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra and his group 4.40, was a milestone for bachata music, bringing it to a wider audience both in the Dominican Republic and internationally. The album, which also had a Portuguese edition titled Romance Rosa in 1992, was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best Latin Tropical Album, in addition to two Lo Nuestro awards for Tropical Album of the Year and Tropical Group of the Year.
Since its release by Karen Records and Universal Music Latino, Bachata Rosa proved to be a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart. Seven singles were released from this album, four of which managed to place in the top ten of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. Juan Luis Guerra's style, known for fusing merengue, jazz, bolero, and salsa with Afro-Antillean influences, is present in this work, which, while associated with Dominican bachata, enriches it with additional melodic elements.
