The Night of My Love tells a story that begins with anxiety and ends in disappointment. The narrator waits for a night of romance, but love never arrives. The lyrics, written in three verses per stanza, unravel that wait until the voice breaks in bitterness. What makes this song special is not just the text, but how it sounds: the accompaniment with celesta gives it an air of an old music box, as if time itself were stopping with every note. It’s a small but key detail, because that instrument lends the recording a fragile, almost childlike brilliance that contrasts with the harshness of the words.

The song was born in 1959, written by Dolores Duran amid comings and goings around the city. According to her friend Marisa Gata Mansa, the lyrics were polished in cafés, nightclubs, and even on the street, where Dolores would stop to tweak verses between drinks and smoke. She recorded her version a few weeks before her death, and the record was posthumously released on a 78 rpm alongside A Case Closed. Within two weeks, it was already selling in Brazil. Later came versions by other artists: Elza Laranjeira, Agostinho dos Santos, Elizeth Cardoso, Lúcio Alves, and Nelson Gonçalves in 1959 and 1960. Maysa included it on her album Maysa Sings Songs Before Dawn (1961), recorded in the United States and Argentina, where her dramatic voice gave it a more intimate twist. The song also crossed borders: there were versions in French, Spanish, and even English, such as Lenita Bruno’s in Lenita Bruno in Hollywood (1968). In 1968, a biographical film about Dolores Duran was also released under the same title.
