More about Ultrágeno
Biography
Recognition came quickly. Ultrágeno made it onto lists of the best Colombian rock: the book Rock colombiano: 100 discos, 50 años placed it at #24, Rolling Stone at #12, and Rateyourmusic at #42. But what made them unique was their connection with the audience. Divino Niño became an anthem at festivals like Rock al Parque, and the video for Ultrágeno — made with a grant from the Ministry of Culture — aired on MTV Latino and won the award for Best Colombian Video at the Much Music Awards in Canada. In 1999, they even covered Nuestra Fe by Soda Stereo for an Argentine tribute. Their second work, Código Fuente (2002), delved deeper into the personal: lyrics that spoke of their own wounds within a society they already knew all too well.
The band took a hiatus in 2004 when its members left the country, except for Barragan, who finished his studies. They returned in 2007 for three lightning-fast shows, one of them at Rock al Parque, as if no time had passed. Today, more than two decades after their first demo, they remain a benchmark: not for the awards or the lists, but for that sound that, like ultrágeno gas, continues to glow in the dark.
