More about The Alan Parsons Project
Biography
After signing with Arista Records, the group experienced their peak exposure. I Robot (1977) and Eye in the Sky (1982) became commercial successes, especially in North America and continental Europe, though in their home country, Great Britain, they never cracked the Top 40. Songs like "Games People Play" or "Eye in the Sky" played on radios worldwide, but their sound was never mainstream: they were concept albums where each track had a place within a broader narrative. Woolfson sang on some tracks, such as "Time," creating a contrast with the deeper voices of other guest vocalists like John Miles or Lenny Zakatek. The team of musicians who accompanied them was almost a band in itself: Ian Bairnson on guitars, David Paton on bass, and Andrew Powell handling orchestral arrangements were constant presences in the studio.
By the late 1980s, the formula began to shift. Gaudi (1987) was their final album as The Alan Parsons Project, but the project did not end there: Woolfson turned to musicals like Freudiana and Gambler, while Parsons continued working solo. Though they only performed one live concert during their active years—at the Night of the Proms in 1990—their influence endured. Over time, Parsons revived the name for tours with a live version of the band, now called Alan Parsons Symphonic Project, which in 2004 and 2005 filled stadiums on a world tour. They even recorded a live album in Colombia in 2013, proving that their music still resonated decades later.
