System of a Down

System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, California, in 1994. Their sound is characterized by a fusion of styles blending alternative metal and hard rock, with lyrics that tackle social and political issues head-on. Since 1997, the lineup has consisted of Serj Tankian (lead vocals and keyboards), Daron Malakian (guitar and vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass), and John Dolmayan (drums), who joined after the departure of the original drummer, Andy Khachaturian.

The band achieved commercial success with five studio albums, three of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Their music is known for its political edge, reflected in songs like "B.Y.O.B.", which criticizes war, and "Prison Song", which addresses the prison-industrial complex. After a hiatus in 2006, they reunited in 2010, and though they released two songs in 2020, they have not released new material since the albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize, both from 2005. Throughout their career, they have sold over 12 million records worldwide, and their singles "Aerials" and "Hypnotize" reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

More about System of a Down

Biography

System of a Down's history traces back to their early days as Soil, where Tankian and Malakian met in a recording studio in 1992. Despite an eight-year age gap, their shared passion for music brought them together. After Soil disbanded, they decided to form System of a Down, taking their name from a Malakian poem titled "Victims of a Down", which was later tweaked to appeal to a broader audience. In 1995, they performed for the first time under the name Soil and recorded a series of demos that, though never commercially released, circulated in file-sharing networks and helped build their fanbase.

In 1998, they released their self-titled debut album, featuring singles like "Sugar" and "Spiders", which received radio and MTV airplay. Their second album, Toxicity, came out in 2001 and debuted at number one in the U.S. and Canada, later achieving multi-platinum status. The song "Chop Suey!" gained notoriety following the 9/11 attacks, boosting their popularity. Throughout their career, System of a Down has left a significant mark on music, not only for their unique style but also for their commitment to thought-provoking themes.
