Leonard Cohen

To understand the music of Leonard Cohen, it is useful to think of his voice as a compass that always points to the depths of the human experience. His lyrics, often laden with reflections on faith, mortality, loneliness, betrayal, and redemption, intertwine with themes of social and political conflict, love, desire, and regret. He is not an artist who stays on the surface; his songs invite deep introspection, exploring the complexity of emotions and relationships. His musical work, which began in 1966 after an initial career as a poet and novelist, is distinguished by raw honesty and a musicality that evolved over the years, from a minimalist folk sound to explorations with influences from jazz, East Asian, and Mediterranean music, and even synthesizer productions.

The path of Cohen in music was not linear, but a constant sonic and thematic quest. After his early folk albums like Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967), Songs from a Room (1969), Songs of Love and Hate (1971), and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974), he experimented with more elaborate sounds. A turning point was Death of a Ladies' Man in 1977, where he collaborated with Phil Spector, marking a departure from previous minimalism. Then, in 1979, with Recent Songs, he returned to a style closer to his roots, but enriched with new influences. It was in 1984, with the album Various Positions, that he released his best-known song, "Hallelujah," a piece that has resonated in very diverse ways over time.

Biography

The career of Leonard Cohen was also marked by periods of intense creative activity and reevaluation. After the success of I'm Your Man (1988) and The Future (1992), which explored dark themes and references to social unrest, Cohen returned to the music scene in 2001 with Ten New Songs, a work that was well received in Canada and Europe. An unexpected turn occurred in 2005 when he discovered that his manager had embezzled his funds, which prompted him to resume touring to recover his losses. This phase, which extended between 2008 and 2013, was very fruitful and culminated in the release of three albums in his final years: Old Ideas (2012), Popular Problems (2014), and You Want It Darker (2016), the latter released shortly before his passing. His legacy was posthumously completed with Thanks for the Dance in 2019. Throughout his life, Cohen was recognized with important distinctions, including the Order of Canada and the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 2011.
