Gotye

Wouter Andre De Backer, known artistically as Gotye, was born on May 21, 1980, in Bruges, Belgium. He is a singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist with Belgian-Australian dual nationality. His 2011 track, "Somebody That I Used to Know", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the best-selling song of 2,012. This made him the fifth Australian artist to lead this chart and the second born in Belgium to achieve this, after The Singing Nun in 1963.At the February 2013 Grammy Awards ceremony, Gotye received three awards, including the Best Recording Award for "Somebody That I Used to Know". Additionally, he has been awarded seven ARIA awards and was nominated for MTV EMAs in the category of Best Performance in Asia and the Pacific.

His biggest hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know", reached number one on various music charts worldwide.De Backer moved to Australia with his family in 1982, initially living in Sydney before settling in Montmorency, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His mother gave him the nickname "Gotye", derived from "Gauthier", the French version of his name in Dutch. When enrolling him in school, his parents opted for the English version of his name, Walter.From a young age, De Backer showed a great interest in music, learning to play several instruments, especially the piano and the drums. In 2012, he recalled that during his adolescence he listened devotedly to the album Songs of Faith and Devotion by Depeche Mode, and commented that this album was a major influence on his desire to create music.

Biography

During his youth, he formed the band Downstares with three friends from high school, among them Lucas Taranto, who still participates in his live performances. After finishing high school, the members of Downstares took separate paths.In 2001, his parents moved, leaving his old house in Montmorency so he could continue his studies at the University of Melbourne, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Two friends moved in with him, and the house was affectionately nicknamed The Frat House, becoming a regular meeting place. Gotye's career began to take shape when an older neighbor, who had heard Downstares rehearsing, gave him a collection of LPs from his recently deceased wife.Gotye has released three albums independently, as well as an album of remixes with versions of songs from his first two albums.

He is also a member of the indie-pop band The Basics, which has released three independent studio albums and other works since 2002.The singer Kimbra collaborated with Gotye on the single "Somebody That I Used to Know", which is part of his album "Making Mirrors", released in 2011. This album had great success in various regions of the world, especially in Australia, where it reached seven platinum discs.
