Foster the People

Foster the People doesn’t sound like a band that settled into a single style. Their music blends the electric with the organic, the pop with the experimental, and that’s clear from the first chord. At the core is Mark Foster, who formed the band in Los Angeles in 2009 after years of playing in bars and writing jingles for commercials. What’s interesting is that, before becoming a trio, it was a solo project where he played almost everything: guitar, keyboards, and even drums on some recordings. The sound he was chasing didn’t fit into one box, and that ended up becoming their trademark.

The breakthrough came in 2010 with "Pumped Up Kicks", a track that started as a demo on his laptop and ended up on commercial radios. The song wasn’t meant to be an anthem, but its catchy rhythm and unsettling lyrics made it go viral before algorithms even existed. When Torches dropped in May 2011, the album already had two other hits: "Helena Beat" and "Houdini". What’s striking is that, despite sounding polished, the recording wasn’t flawless: some performance errors remained in the final version, giving it a more human touch. The album earned them three Grammy nominations, but what truly solidified their place was watching "Pumped Up Kicks" climb the Billboard Hot 100 without any planning.

More about Foster the People

Biography

After two years on tour, they took a chance with Supermodel in March 2014. The album had a darker edge, with songs like "Coming of Age" exploring fame and its shadows. But the real shift came in 2017 with Sacred Hearts Club, where they officially added Isom Innis and Sean Cimino as members. From there came "Sit Next to Me", a track that, against all odds, reached number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a streaming success. Between 2018 and 2021, the band experimented with shorter formats: an EP and a few singles, but never strayed from their essence. In May 2024, they released "Lost in Space", and in August of the same year, Paradise State of Mind, their fourth album. What defines Foster the People isn’t just their evolving sound, but how they make the simple feel profound.
