Filter

Filter stands out for a sound proposal that blends the energy of rock with industrial and electronic elements, evolving into an alternative metal with powerful guitars. From the beginning, the band, founded in 1993 by Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang, explored industrial rock with clear resonances of Nine Inch Nails. This is no coincidence, as Richard Patrick was NIN's guitarist during the Pretty Hate Machine tour and in the videos for Broken. The band's initial sound was darker, but over time, their style shifted toward heavier guitars, consolidating an industrial metal sound. A distinctive feature of the band is their direct and fierce lyrics, which often tackle intense themes, and the raspy, unmistakable voice of Richard Patrick.

Richard Patrick decided to start Filter after leaving Nine Inch Nails, while Trent Reznor was working on The Downward Spiral. The band signed with Reprise Records in 1994 and released their debut album, Short Bus, in 1995. This work received good commercial reception, boosted by the single "Hey Man Nice Shot". To bring the music to the stage, Patrick and Liesegang added Geno Lenardo on guitar, Frank Cavanagh on bass, and Matt Walker on drums, who also appeared in the music video for the album's second single, "Dose". During the period between their first and second albums, Filter became notable for their contributions to soundtracks, such as "Thanks Bro" for Songs In The Key Of X: Music From And Inspired By The X-Files and "Jurassitol" for The Crow: City of Angels in 1996. That same year, the band released the home video Phenomenology, which included live recordings and music videos. In 1997, Brian Liesegang left Filter due to creative differences with Richard Patrick, shortly after collaborating on "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" with The Crystal Method for the Spawn soundtrack. From then on, Richard Patrick continued the Filter project, accompanied by session musicians. In 1998, Patrick recorded a cover of "One" by Harry Nilsson for the soundtrack of the film The X-Files.

Biography

With Title of Record, released in 1999, Filter reunited with Geno Lenardo and Frank Cavanagh, adding Steve Gillis on drums. This album marked a slight departure from industrial rock, giving rise to "Take a Picture", a ballad that became one of their biggest hits. The song "Captain Bligh" from the same album was written by Richard Patrick, inspired by Trent Reznor's habits after his departure from Nine Inch Nails. In 2002, the album The Amalgamut arrived, featuring singles like "Where Do We Go from Here?" and "American Cliché". The song "The Only Way"
