The story behind

Cancer, according to DoReSol

The song Cancer by Filter has a sound that sticks from the first few seconds: that distorted bass that intertwines with the voice of Richard Patrick, creating a tension that never lets go. The track progresses with an irregular rhythm, as if breathing in patterns that don’t quite fit together, yet end up giving it that unique personality. It’s not a song you listen to in the background; it demands attention, because every layer—from the drums to the synthesizers—is designed so the listener feels they’re facing something unlike anything else on the album.

Recorded amid a complicated process, Cancer ended up being one of the key pieces of Title of Record, the second album by Filter. The early sessions in Patrick’s home studio were slow, with lineup changes and technical adjustments delaying the work. But once the team stabilized and reinforcements in production arrived—such as Geno Lenardo, Rae DiLeo, and Ben Grosse—the sound took shape. The final mix, handled by Grosse, gave it that dirty, organic feel that contrasts with the polish of other tracks on the album. By the time it was released in 1999, the album already sounded like a cohesive whole, and Cancer stood out for its nearly seven-minute runtime, something uncommon for radio at the time. In 2001, the album had surpassed 800,000 copies sold in the United States, and though it never reached the top spot on the Billboard 200, its impact was enough to land the band on the Family Values Tour that same year.
