Duke Ellington

Duke Ellington was born in Washington D. C. in 1899. Since childhood, he got into playing the piano. His father was a pianist, his mother also, although they played different things. They lived with their grandparents in a neighborhood of Washington. Ellington had seven years old when he started taking piano lessons. His mother surrounded him with elegant women, so that he would learn to behave well and dress stylishly. His friends noticed it, and gave him the nickname "Duke". He credited it to an acquaintance, Edgar McEntree, who said that for him to accompany him always, he had to have a title. Thus was born the name.
