More about Duke Ellington
Biography
Ellington did not write for instruments, but for people. "Beyond category" was his motto: music that did not fit into boxes. He recorded with nearly every record label of his time, composed film scores and even Broadway musicals, but his legacy is not in the awards — like the Pulitzer he received posthumously in 1999 — but in how each piece sounds like a conversation among friends. "Mood Indigo" is not a sad melody, it is a sunset in Harlem. "Sophisticated Lady" is not forced elegance, it is the elegance of someone who knows music can be sophisticated without losing warmth. And "Solitude" is not loneliness, it is the space where every note finds its place.
