Biography
In the 1990s, the band reached another level. Violator (1990) climbed to number seven on the Billboard 200 and sold three million copies in the United States, thanks to hits like Enjoy the Silence. But the recording process for Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993) was fraught with internal tensions that led Wilder to leave in 1995. The trio —Gahan, Gore and Fletcher— reunited for Ultra (1997), a more austere album that reflected the personal struggles of its members. Since then, they’ve alternated between massive tours and creative breaks, releasing albums like Playing the Angel (2005) or Delta Machine (2013), where the Gahan-Gore duo explored more organic sounds without abandoning synthesizers. Their latest work, Memento Mori (2023), arrived after Fletcher’s death in 2022, closing an era but making it clear that their music continues to evolve. With over 100 million records sold and 54 songs on the UK singles chart, their legacy isn’t measured in numbers alone: it’s in how they changed the very idea of what an electronic band could be.
