More about Cyndi Lauper
Biography
Beyond commercial success, Lauper always sought reinvention. In 1993, Hat Full of Stars was hailed by critics for its lyrical and vocal maturity, with lyrics addressing social and personal themes with uncommon honesty. But it was in theater where she found another stage for her creativity. In 2013, the music for Kinky Boots —the musical she composed— earned her a Tony for Best Original Score, becoming the first woman to win that award solo. The show, which later stormed London with an Olivier for Best Musical, proved her talent went far beyond pop stages. In 2016, Detour took her to Nashville, where she recorded a country album produced by Tony Brown, showing that even in foreign genres she could leave her mark. And though time passed, her energy never faded: in 2024, at 71, she launched her farewell tour, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, with shows until April 2025. It’s not nostalgia: it’s proof that, for her, music has always been an act of freedom.
