Control Machete

When you listen to Control Machete, you encounter a proposal that fuses the energy of hip hop with the identity of northern Mexico. The sound foundation is built with the scratch and keyboards of Antonio "DJ Toy Selectah" Hernández, complemented by the voices of Patricio Chapa Elizalde, known as "Pato Machete", and Fermín IV. This unique sound positioned them as a key piece of the movement known as Avanzada Regia.

The starting point for Mexican hip hop to move out of the underground circuit and reach a mass audience came with their debut album, Mucho Barato, released in 1996. Produced by Jason Roberts, who had already worked with Cypress Hill, this record marked a before and after. The single ¿Comprendes Mendes? was the one that catapulted them, resonating strongly and becoming their most recognized song to date. From there, they began touring international stages, taking their music to countries like the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, and Spain, sharing the bill with artists such as Delinquent Habits.

More about Control Machete

Biography

After the impact of Mucho Barato, the group returned to the studios to create Artillería Pesada Presenta.... This work included tracks like Sí Señor and Amores Perros, the latter featured in the soundtrack of the homonymous film by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The album also had global reach when it was used in a television commercial for the Super Bowl. The appeal of Control Machete was notable; they sold hundreds of thousands of copies of Mucho Barato across Latin America and performed before audiences of thousands in Spain and South America. Their presence was so significant that they even opened for David Bowie’s concert at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and for U2’s Pop Mart tour in Mexico. Additionally, they participated in tribute albums to figures like José José and Soda Stereo, performing Amnesia and Camaleón respectively. In 2001, Fermín IV embarked on a solo career, and later, DJ Toy explored projects such as Sonidero Nacional.
