Mucho barato…

When Control Machete released Mucho Barato in 1996, hip hop in Mexico took a significant turn. The group, formed in 1995 in Monterrey by Antonio "DJ Toy Selectah" Hernández, Patricio Chapa Elizalde (known as Pato Machete), and Fermín IV, blended the culture and sounds of northern Mexico with the genre. This album, produced by Jason Roberts, who also worked with Cypress Hill, marked hip hop's transition from an underground movement to achieving much greater popularity and acceptance, similar to that of rock.

About the album

Mucho barato…, according to DoReSol

The impact of Mucho Barato was felt immediately. Its single ¿Comprendes, Mendes? became their most recognized track and played constantly, serving as the gateway for many to the sound of Control Machete. The album, with its 18 tracks, not only defined a particular sound for the group but also contributed significantly to the musical movement known as Avanzada Regia.

By 1997, the group was already touring, showcasing how this work had positioned Mexican hip hop on a broader stage. Control Machete was recognized as the first Mexican rap group with international reach, and their unique style led them to be included in important lists, such as the "50 greatest rappers in the history of Spanish-language rap" by Rolling Stone magazine.
