Al Green

Al Green doesn’t sound like anyone else: his voice shifts from a silken whisper to a roar that seems to rise from the bowels of the American South, and that contrast defines every note he records. He isn’t just a soul singer; he’s someone who turns pain and joy into melodies that lodge in the chest. When you listen to Let’s Stay Together, it’s not just a song—it’s a moment where the rhythm stretches like warm honey and the strings coil with a precision that feels effortless but is meticulously calculated. He worked with Willie Mitchell and his team at Hi Records, and there the sound became more polished, more intimate. They recorded in long sessions with musicians who already knew what they wanted: a groove that would never let go.

By the mid-70s, after selling millions with hits like Tired of Being Alone and Love and Happiness, life took an unexpected turn. One night in 1974, his then-girlfriend threw a pot of boiling grits at him for refusing to marry her, leaving him with severe burns and a question that forced him to rethink everything. That pain drew him closer to faith, and in 1976 he became an ordained pastor. But he didn’t abandon music: he kept recording, though now with one foot in gospel. The Belle Album (1977) was a record critics adored, but the public no longer responded as it once had. Even a stage accident in 1979, when he fell from a platform in Cincinnati, he took as a sign to focus on his church and spiritual projects.

More about Al Green

Biography

In the 80s, he returned to soul with He Is the Light (1985), this time with Angelo Earl by his side, and though commercial success was no longer the same, his voice remained a magnet. He recorded gospel that earned him several Grammys, but he also ventured into unexpected collaborations, such as the duet with Annie Lennox on Put a Little Love in Your Heart for the *Scrooged* soundtrack. In 1995, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognized his legacy, but he kept singing, whether in his church or onstage, proving that his music always knew how to rise again.
