The story behind

Your Mirror, according to DoReSol

The song Your Mirror, part of the album Stars by Simply Red, presents itself as an internal dialogue, a kind of conversation with oneself where aspiration and skepticism are debated. The way it is constructed evokes the ballads of The Temptations, but with a distinctive touch from Mick Hucknall, who demonstrates his ability to create soulful pop. Those who heard it at the time noticed its strength, especially due to the bass and piano hooks that sustain it. Hucknall's vocal performance becomes more intense, almost threatening in some passages, which sets it apart from other pieces on the same album. Some described it as a "great melody", "dreamy and ethereal", while others perceived it as "slow and monotonous" with a chorus that recalled "singing birds".

This piece was written by Mick Hucknall and produced by himself along with Stewart Levine. It was released in July 1992 as the fifth single from the album Stars, released in 1991. The album itself was a resounding success, especially in the United Kingdom, where it became the best-selling album of 1991 and 1992, something that had not happened since Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel in 1970-1971. Stars has been certified twelve times platinum in its home country and, as of April 2019, remained the fourteenth best-selling album in UK history. The song Your Mirror has since been included in compilations such as Greatest Hits in 1996 and Simply Red 25: The Greatest Hits in 2008, where an alternative version with a more prominent guitar solo can be found. The recording engineering and mixing of the song were handled by Daren Klein.
