The story behind
Simply Red released Something Got Me Started in September 1991 as the first single from their fourth album, Stars. The song was released in several versions: 7 inches, 12 inches and CD, with a remix done by Perfecto, which is Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne. The video was directed by Andy Morahan and part of it was filmed in Spain.
The song had good acceptance in several countries, reaching number 11 in the United Kingdom and being within the top 10 in New Zealand and several European countries. In Europe, it reached number one in November of that year. In Canada and the United States it didn't have the same success as their previous hits, but it still managed to chart well.
The song was included in several band compilations, such as Greatest Hits in 1996 and Song Book 1985–2010 in 2013. The band already had a lot of fame since the mid-eighties, but Mick Hucknall wanted to continue evolving. He worked with new musicians and producers who gave a more modern sound, with more emphasis on the rhythm.
The original version of Something Got Me Started was performed at a concert in March 1990, while promoting their album A New Flame. The song remains part of the band's live sets and is often played as an encore.
