The story behind

Something Got Me Started, according to DoReSol

When Simply Red released "Something Got Me Started" in September 1991, it not only presented a new sound for the band but also marked the beginning of a very successful era. This song, which became the first single from their album Stars, was distinguished by its more dancefloor-oriented approach, something that set it apart from their previous work. It featured catchy rhythms, with a piano that felt very current for the time, and a voice from Mick Hucknall that, according to some critics, sounded more restrained than usual, bringing a new dimension to his style. The production aimed for a programmed drum sound that didn't sound artificial, which led Hucknall to collaborate with new musicians like Gota Yashiki, whose skill in rhythm programming was key. Additionally, producer Stewart Levine brought in Heitor Pereira, who redefined the guitar sound, prioritizing rhythm over melody.

The song had an interesting journey from its beginnings. An early version was first heard at a concert in Didsbury, Manchester, in March 1990, while the band was promoting their previous album, A New Flame. Upon its official release, "Something Got Me Started" reached number 11 in the UK and performed well in several European countries, even reaching the top spot on European Hit Radio in November 1991. While it didn't have the same impact in North America as their previous hits, it did chart in Canada and the United States. The song was released in various formats, including 7- and 12-inch singles, and CD versions that included remixes by artists such as Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne. These remixes, along with others by Steve 'Silk' Hurley, were instrumental in its success on the UK and European dance charts, demonstrating that Simply Red's popularity transcended the pop realm. "Something Got Me Started" has remained a staple in their live performances since its debut.
