The story behind

You Should Be Dancing, according to DoReSol

There are songs that, upon listening, invite you to move almost without realizing it. You Should Be Dancing is one of those. From the very first beat, it grabs you with a contagious energy that pulls you out of your chair. What's interesting is that this piece, released in 1976, marked a before and after for the Bee Gees, being the track that fully catapulted them into the disco universe. It not only reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 for a week, but it also stayed at the top of the dance club charts for seven weeks. Additionally, it reached fifth place in the UK and fourth on the Billboard Soul chart. It's curious to note that, despite its danceable success, it was the group's only track to top the dance charts.

The recording of You Should Be Dancing took place in 1976, between January and May, at Criteria Studios in Miami, with the participation of the production team Gibb-Galuten-Richardson. It was during this period that Barry Gibb perfected his distinctive falsetto, a vocal resource he had already explored in previous songs but which here became the main signature. It is said that Maurice Gibb devised the bass line and directed the horn parts, while Barry guided Blue Weaver on keyboards and Alan Kendall contributed a guitar solo that surprises with its power, something not so common in dance tracks. Even Stephen Stills, who was recording in the same studio, contributed percussion on some of the February sessions. The lyrics, for their part, celebrate those who enjoy disco music, with a direct chorus that invites you to the dance floor: "What you doin' on your back?/You should be dancing".
