The story behind

yo quisiera, according to DoReSol

«Yo quisiera» is not only Reik's first single, but the moment Mexican pop found a ballad that sounded like a confession. Recorded in 2004 with borrowed equipment and the urgency of a group still searching for its place, the song arrived with a clean melody and lyrics that spoke of a simple yet intense desire. It wasn't a fireworks-filled track, but one of acoustic guitar and voices intertwining like a whisper that turns into a shout. The detail that makes it instantly recognizable is that bridge where the tension is broken by a brief silence before exploding into the chorus, as if the singer couldn't contain what they felt. It's no coincidence that, years later, it remains the song many choose to start playing: it has the perfect structure for an amateur guitarist to practice arpeggios and a beginner singer to train their breathing.

The song was born in Mexicali, where Jesús, Julio, and later Gilberto—the trio we know today—rehearsed in garages before producer Abelardo Vázquez heard them and proposed recording some demos. By the time Reik—their debut album, released in May 2005 under Sony BMG Norte—hit the stores, «Yo quisiera» was already playing on radios across the Mexican Republic and climbing the charts. The video, uploaded to YouTube in October 2009, accumulated 365 million views in four years and today surpasses 432 million, with over a million likes. It wasn't a planned hit: it was the song that captured the moment a young group discovered their sound could connect with people who, like them, were looking for something authentic amidst the saturation of commercial pop.
