Wonderland

The song Wonderland, with its 3:50 runtime, is a sample of the sound Simply Red was exploring on their album Stars. This record, released on September 30, 1991, became a milestone for the British band. It was not only the best-selling album in the UK during 1991 and 1992, an achievement not seen since Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water in 1970–1971, but by April 2019 it ranked as the fourteenth best-selling album of all time in that country. The album Stars was also nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1992 and was included in Q magazine's "The 100 Greatest British Albums Ever" list in 2000.

The production of Stars, including Wonderland, was handled by Mick Hucknall and Stewart Levine. The recording was done by Daren Klein, who also handled the mixing, while the mastering was done by Bernie Grundman. Simply Red, led by vocalist Mick Hucknall, had already had previous successes like Picture Book in 1985, which included tracks like "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" and "Holding Back the Years". Later, in 1987, they released Men and Women, and in 1989, A New Flame, which resonated strongly with their version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now".
