The story behind

Wind of Change, according to DoReSol

The song Wind of Change by Scorpions is a powerful anthem that captures the spirit of change and hope that defined the late 1980s, a pivotal moment in world history. Klaus Meine, the band's vocalist, wrote the lyrics after visiting the Soviet Union during perestroika, a period when tensions between the communist and capitalist blocs began to fade. The song draws inspiration from his experience at the Moscow Peace Music Festival in 1989, where he performed in front of an audience of approximately 300,000 people. In this context, Wind of Change becomes a personal reflection on the changes unfolding in the world.

Recorded for the album Crazy World, released in 1990, this ballad became a global hit after its release as a single in January 1991. The song reached the top position on charts in Germany and six other European countries, as well as climbing to fourth place in the United States and second in the United Kingdom. With over 14 million copies sold, it stands as one of the best-selling singles of all time and is particularly notable for being the most successful by a German artist. The lyrics reference iconic Moscow landmarks such as the Moskva River and Gorky Park, and mention the balalaika, a Russian musical instrument, symbolizing cultural fusion.

The recording process took place at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands, under the production of Keith Olsen and the band itself. The song, which lasts 5:13 in its album version, has been reinterpreted numerous times, including a Russian version titled Ветер перемен and a Spanish version called Viento de Cambio. Its impact has been so significant that in 2005 it was chosen as the song of the century by viewers of a German television channel. In this case, music is not only a means of artistic expression but also a vehicle for conveying a message of peace and unity in times of transformation.
