The story behind

Wild Is Love, according to DoReSol

Nat "King" Cole recorded Wild Is Love in just two minutes and three seconds, but that short time does not diminish its weight. The song sounds like a musical sigh: a melody that glides effortlessly, almost as if it were floating above the rhythm. Cole’s piano does not stay still; it carries the piece with an elegance that recalls those moments when music seems to breathe without effort. There are no unnecessary adornments, only the essence of a theme that holds itself up, as if each note were calculated not to distract but to invite.

Cole’s life before Wild Is Love explains why it sounds this way. He was born in Montgomery in 1919, but grew up in the bustle of Chicago, where jazz and gospel blended in churches and clubs of Bronzeville. His mother played the organ in church, and he learned piano there, with no teachers beyond her. As a teenager, he was captivated by the sound of Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, two figures who shaped his playing style. By seventeen, he was already leading his own group, and his brother Eddie joined as bassist in 1936. The nickname "King" came to him on stage, where his piano presence made him the center of attention. By the time he arrived in Long Beach in the 1940s, he had already left behind his full last name and become a recognizable figure in California’s jazz scene. Wild Is Love is not just a song; it is the reflection of someone who understood jazz as a natural language, without needing to force it.
