Fun facts
Carole King wrote "Where You Lead" in 1970 with Toni Stern. The song appeared on her album Tapestry of 1971. Barbra Streisand recorded it in the studio for her album Barbra Joan Streisand of the same year, and later performed it live on Live Concert at the Forum of 1972, as part of a medley with "Sweet Inspiration". Later, the song became the soundtrack of Gilmore Girls, a series of The WB between 2000 and 2007. King and Louise Goffin rewrote it for the project. It is also in the soundtrack of Our Little Corner of 2002.
The story behind
Carole King wrote "Where You Lead" in 1970 with Toni Stern, and recorded it in January 1971. It was included in her album Tapestry, released in February of that year. The song became a hit for Barbra Streisand, who recorded it during a session on April 21, 1971. Streisand's version included the band Fanny, plus Billy Preston on the organ and Richard Perry on the drums.
The original lyrics by King had a bridge that was missing, so she asked Stern for help. She wrote a stronger bridge with a more active voice, including a line that said: "if you want to live in New York, I'll be there". King removed the word "slut" and asked permission from Lou Adler, the producer, to use "New York". He approved it.
The song was used as the theme for the series Gilmore Girls in the 2000s, with a revised version by King and Louise Goffin. In the 2000s, King stopped performing it live because she considered it politically incorrect, but she included it again after the revision.
