The story behind

When Carole King released It’s Too Late, she was already a songwriter with a solid career, but it was in the 1970s that her singing career took off forcefully. This song, released on February 10, 1971, was part of her second studio album, titled Tapestry. The production of this album was handled by Lou Adler, who worked with recording engineer Hank Cicalo to shape the sound. The main theme of Tapestry, It’s Too Late, along with I Feel the Earth Move, became a resounding success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts for five consecutive weeks.

The impact of Tapestry was enormous, and It’s Too Late solidified its place as one of its cornerstones. The album received critical acclaim and is considered one of the most important of all time. In 1972, at the 14th annual Grammy Awards, Tapestry took home four awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it 14 times platinum, positioning it among the best-selling albums in history. Furthermore, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. The songwriter, born Carol Joan Klein in New York in 1942, had already written more than two dozen hits for other artists with her collaborator Gerry Goffin in the 60s, many of which became standards.
