The story behind
The song When the Sun Goes Down does not sound like any other track by Arctic Monkeys on their debut album. The mid-song shift in rhythm —from a clean passage with electric guitars to a thunderous drum and heavy bass— is not just a musical device, but the way the lyrics expose the harshness of what they recount. The narrator describes a nighttime scene in Sheffield’s Neepsend neighborhood, where a scantily clad girl approaches for help. What begins as an almost mundane moment turns darker when the same man who accosts her appears in a Ford Mondeo to take her away. The song does not judge, but makes it clear that, when the sun sets, the city reveals another side.
Recorded at The Chapel studio in Lincolnshire, the track has an accelerated tempo (169 BPM) and is in B major, but what stands out most is how the dynamic shift mirrors the story’s turn. The chorus repeats a phrase that sounds like a local saying —"they said it changes when the sun goes down around here"— as the music shifts from a relaxed air to a sharp punch of distorted guitars. The video, directed by Paul Fraser and released on MTV2 in late 2005, features actors who later appear in the short film Scummy Man, which delves deeper into the life of the protagonist, Nina. The song reached number one on the UK charts in January 2006, shortly after the success of I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, and became a key track in understanding the band’s sound at the time.
