The story behind

When When My First Wife Left Me begins, the bass and drums lock into a rhythm that seems to drag like the dust of a rural road. There are no frills here: just the raspy voice of R.L. Burnside telling a story that reeks of sweat and decisions made under the Mississippi sun. The guitar, minimal but precise, marks the beat like a hammer on an anvil, while the harmonica peeks through short phrases, almost like a sigh that never quite becomes a complaint. It’s the kind of song that doesn’t demand attention, but once it grabs you, it won’t let go.

He recorded it in a single take, with whatever gear he could scrounge up in his friend’s home studio. No retakes, no second chances: what you hear is what came out of the room in that moment, with the natural distortion of the old amplifier and the echo of untreated walls. It lasts three minutes and forty-eight seconds, but in that time, more truths fit than in many polished lyrics from other records. Burnside wasn’t trying to sound perfect; he was making sure every note sounded like it had just come up from the earth beneath his feet.
