The story behind
Spice Girls recorded "Wannabe" in December 1995 in a London studio. The song, a pop rap of two and a half minutes, was released as a single from the album Spice, launched in 1996. It was the group's first song, and became an international hit. The lyrics deal with the theme of wanting to be someone else, using a word that became popular in the 1980s. The song was recorded with the same producer who wrote the lyrics, Richard Stannard. On the B-side appears "Bumper to Bumper". The music is direct, with a rhythm that sticks in your head. The girls' vocals are not the most outstanding, but their energy and personality make the difference. The song became a hit in several countries, reaching number one in charts such as the Billboard Hot 100, the Brit Award, and the Top 40 of the Netherlands.
