The story behind

Venganza starts with a sharp percussion hit that repeats like a heartbeat, but instead of falling into a four-on-the-floor rhythm, it stretches and contracts. This play with timing —which isn’t quite a full measure nor a simple drag— gives the song an air of contained urgency, as if each note were about to slip away. The voice of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs enters with phrasing that oscillates between reggae and ska, yet doesn’t settle in either: it’s more of a hybrid that sounds like a street party and a threat at the same time, with that bassline that coils around the main melody like an impossible-to-release hook. The track is part of El León, the album they recorded in 1992 in Buenos Aires and which ended up being a turning point for the band. It wasn’t a project designed to be "the big leap": they pieced it together mixing what they had at the time —from classic ska to touches of calypso— and the result ended up sounding like a map of what they could explore next. Venganza stands out in particular because, unlike other cuts on the album that bet on collective euphoria, here the focus is more intimate, almost confidential, even when the rhythm begs to dance. The five minutes and twelve seconds of duration give it room to breathe without haste, letting the bass and guitar converse before the brass section closes the circle with a solo that doesn’t sound like a farewell, but like a warning.
