The story behind

The first time you listen to Una ragione di più, it grabs you with its rhythm and doesn’t let go. It’s one of those songs that starts softly, with a melody that feels made for humming without thinking, but suddenly hits you with an unexpected twist in the lyrics. It’s not just another love song: it speaks of the reasons we invent to stay, even when our heart already knows there’s no turning back. The track balances between the initial calm and that moment when Ornella Vanoni’s voice rises slightly, as if the weight of her words couldn’t fit in a flat tone.

It was recorded in 1969 as the A-side of a single featuring Quando arrivi tu on the B-side, and the following year it was included in Appuntamento con Ornella Vanoni, an album that blended past hits with new tracks. What’s curious is that the record wasn’t a conventional studio effort: it gathered standalone songs, some already known, others premiered on shows like Canzonissima or Senza rete. Yet the detail that stands out most is that the album reached the fifth spot on sales charts—a rare feat for a record without a unifying concept, more like a collage of moments. Though Una ragione di più didn’t win any awards, it ended up being one of those tracks that stuck in the collective memory, to the point that in 2010 two Italian singers, Emma Marrone and Loredana Errore, covered it on Maria De Filippi’s show Amici. It’s exactly three minutes and twenty-six seconds long—no more, no less—like every note was measured to avoid fatigue.
