The story behind
In My Answer, the fourth album in Italian and the third in Spanish by Laura Pausini, there is a song that stands out for how it breaks away from the mold of her most well-known ballads. What Do You Dream About? is not just another love song: it is the only track on the album written by someone outside her usual circle, in this case Phil Collins, who composed it after seeing her in an interview in September 2000. The lyrics, direct and straightforward, speak of dreams as a common ground, that place where everyone — regardless of language — can find themselves. With a duration of 3:44, the song moves between the intimacy of a conversation and the power of a pop that no longer needs adornments to be memorable.
The album was released at a time when Pausini sought to showcase a more mature side, both in her voice and her lyrics. In Spain, it sold 200,000 copies and reached position 8 in its second week, though its most promoted singles — Love Emergency and In Your Absence — were the ones that truly resonated on the radios of Italy, the United States, and Latin America. What’s interesting is that, despite not being her most successful album, My Answer opened doors to unexpected collaborations, such as this one with Collins, and allowed her to explore sounds that would later define her artistic evolution.
