The story behind

The song Tres Palabras (Without You), with a duration of 2:07, is part of the album More Cole Español by Nat King Cole. This work, recorded in Mexico City in 1962 and with arrangements by Ralph Carmichael, marked Cole's third and final foray into Spanish-themed music, following Cole Español from 1958 and A Mis Amigos from 1959. An interesting aspect, according to William Ruhlmann's review, is that, even though Cole still seemed to be perfecting his Spanish pronunciation, his performance on More Cole Español conveyed a distinctive vitality and enjoyment, something a musician can appreciate when listening to vocal delivery in a non-native language.

The career of Nat King Cole, whose full name was Nathaniel Adams Coles (born in Montgomery in 1919 and passed away in Santa Monica in 1965), has deep roots in his musical training. His mother, Perlina Adams, was his only piano teacher, instilling in him knowledge of jazz, gospel, and classical music. The family moved to Chicago, settling in the Bronzeville neighborhood, known for its vibrant nightlife and jazz clubs. It was there that Nat, as a young man, had the opportunity to listen to great figures like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. Inspired by Hines, he began his artistic career in the mid-1930s. He adopted the name Nat Cole, and in 1936 made his first recording with his older brother, Eddie, who played the bass. The band achieved local recognition in Chicago, becoming a regular on stages and receiving the nickname "King" in one of those clubs. Subsequently, Cole participated as a pianist on a tour with Eubie Blake, and upon arriving in Long Beach, California, decided to settle in the city.
