The story behind
The song Adios Mariquita Linda (Adios and Farewell, My Lover), with a duration of 2:53, is part of More Cole Español, the album that Nat King Cole recorded in 1962 in Mexico City. This work marked his third and final foray into Spanish-themed music, following his previous albums Cole Español from 1958 and A Mis Amigos from 1959. In this production, with arrangements by Ralph Carmichael, a change in Cole's interpretation was perceived; although his Spanish pronunciation was still a developing aspect, his enjoyment in singing these pieces was notably greater, which gave a distinctive quality to his vocal delivery in this repertoire.
Behind this performance lies the career of Nathaniel Adams Coles, known as Nat "King" Cole, a jazz pianist and singer born in Montgomery in 1919. His musical training began in Chicago, where his family settled when he was a child. There, his mother, Perlina Adams, who played the organ in church, was his only piano teacher, teaching him jazz, gospel, and classical music. He grew up in the Bronzeville neighborhood, a vibrant center of nightlife and jazz at the time, where he had the opportunity to listen to figures like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. Inspired by Hines, Nat Cole began his artistic career in the mid-1930s, adopting the name Nat Cole and forming a band that his older brother, Eddie, joined as a bassist for their first recording in 1936. It was in the clubs of Chicago where he earned the nickname "King." After a tour as a pianist with Eubie Blake, Nat Cole decided to settle in Long Beach, California, before his death in Santa Monica in 1965.
