The story behind

When you listen to Thunder, you encounter an energy that bursts forth with layers of voices and guitars that sound precise, accompanied by the distinctive sound of a sitar. Some interpret the lyrics as a kind of story about the moment Prince decided to withdraw The Black Album, an episode rumored to have been linked to an intense experience. On the cover of this single, for the first time, Mayte appears. The tracks accompanying Thunder on the B-side are "Violet the Organ Grinder" and "Gett Off" (Thrust Dub), which had already been heard on the maxi-single of "Gett Off".

The recording of Thunder took place at Paisley Park, in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The process included tracking the parts on January 26, 1991, and overdubs on April 22 of the same year. The track fuses styles such as new jack swing, gospel, and funk. Prince not only composed the song but also produced it, working alongside The New Power Generation on the arrangements. The final mix was handled by Michael Koppelman. This single, released in an individually numbered picture disc format, had a limited distribution to the United Kingdom and Ireland. In the United Kingdom, Thunder reached number 28, and in Ireland, it reached third place, remaining on the charts for 12 weeks.
