The story behind

When you dive into *Thinking About You*, you encounter a piece that, while it didn't reach the top spots on the general charts, left its mark on the R&B and dance circuits. This song, initially released as a promotion on January 11, 1985, and later more forcefully in October of the same year, showcases a facet of the artist that connected directly with the dance floor and R&B radio. Its structure, with production relying on synthesizers and a distinct rhythm, invites movement. It's interesting to note that, although it wasn't intended for mainstream pop radio, its presence on the R&B charts was solid, reaching tenth place on the *Billboard* Hot Black Singles and eighth on the Cashbox Black Contemporary Singles. Furthermore, it marked her first foray into the *Billboard* Hot Dance Club Songs, reaching 24th place.

The story behind *Thinking About You* is intertwined with the beginning of Whitney Houston's career. Producer Kashif, who was already working with artists like Evelyn "Champagne" King, became interested in the young singer after seeing her perform "Home" on television. Initially, Kashif hesitated because he perceived her style as "lounge music," but he changed his mind. Together with songwriter La Forrest "La La" Cope, they created this song, which Kashif himself described as something "loosely put together." He himself contributed his voice to the chorus, without appearing in the credits, and added elements like a rock guitar and marimbas. This collaboration occurred within the framework of recording Houston's first album, released in 1985, which also included "You Give Good Love," the lead single. *Thinking About You* ended up appearing on the debut album and, later, as the B-side of another single in 1986.
