The story behind

The Show Must Go On, according to DoReSol

When one delves into *The Show Must Go On*, they encounter a piece that, beyond its sonic power, resonates with the story it tells. The song, released as the closing track of the album *Innuendo* in 1991, was the last to be published before the passing of Freddie Mercury. Although attributed to Queen, the primary authorship lies with guitarist Brian May. The lyrics, as it transpires, are a reflection of Mercury's determination to carry on despite his deteriorating health, at a time when his HIV/AIDS diagnosis had not yet been made public, but media speculation was intense.

The recording of this rock ballad, which took place in 1990, presented significant challenges. Brian May recalled having doubts about whether Freddie Mercury could handle the demanding vocal parts due to his condition. However, Mercury's response was emphatic: "I'll do it, darling," and with a dose of vodka, he entered the studio and recorded the vocals exceptionally. The musical structure, which begins in B minor, modulates to C-sharp minor, and returns to B minor, creates a sense of uplift before resolving. Producer David Richards suggested a key change in the second verse, and May contributed the melody and completed the lyrics, drawing inspiration from Pachelbel's *Canon* for a bridge.

The promotional music video, released on October 14, 1991, to promote *Greatest Hits II*, could not feature new footage of Mercury due to his delicate health. Instead, a montage of Queen's videos from 1981 to 1991 was compiled. After Mercury's death on November 24, 1991, the single re-entered the UK charts, matching its initial chart run. A live version, with Elton John on lead vocals and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath on rhythm guitar, was first performed on April 20, 1992, at the tribute concert for Freddie Mercury. Subsequently, the song has been performed by lineups such as Queen + Paul Rodgers and Queen + Adam Lambert.
