«The Rain Song» is a romantic ballad lasting 7 minutes and 32 seconds, included on the fifth album by British band Led Zeppelin, titled Houses of the Holy, released in 1973. Guitarist Jimmy Page created the initial melody of this piece at his residence in Plumpton, England, where he had recently installed a studio mixing console. This new equipment, a Vista model, included components from the Pye Mobile Studio, which had been used to record both Led Zeppelin's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 and The Who's album "Live at Leeds". Initially known as "Slush" due to its orchestral-like melodic presentation, Page developed a complete structure for the song, to which vocalist Robert Plant added the lyrics. Plant considers his vocal performance on this track to be one of his finest. The song also features a Mellotron played by John Paul Jones, which contributes to the orchestral effect, while Page uses a Danelectro guitar. The inspiration for "The Rain Song" came from George Harrison, who remarked to Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham that the band had never written a ballad. According to Brad Tolinski's book "Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page", Page recounts that Harrison told Bonham: "The problem with you is that you never do ballads". Page responded: "I'll give them a ballad" and thus "The Rain Song" was born, appearing on Houses of the Holy. Page even mentions that the first two chords of the song quote Harrison's "Something". However, there is some controversy over the exact words that were exchanged. During Led Zeppelin's live performances between 1972 and 1975, the band performed this song immediately after "The Song Remains the Same", following the album's order. This was because Page used a double-neck Gibson EDS-1275 guitar for both songs: the 12-string neck for "The Song Remains the Same" and then switching to the 6-string neck for "The Rain Song". In live performances, the song was frequently played in A major, a semitone higher than the studio version. On the 1980 European tour, "The Rain Song" was the only song from Houses of the Holy to be performed. On this occasion, Page again used the double-neck guitar, making it the only time he used solely the 6-string neck without first playing the 12-string. In all live versions, the orchestral string sounds were recreated by Jones, either on the Mellotron (1972–1975) or a Yamaha synthesizer (1979–1980), as Led Zeppelin never employed a string section in their concerts. Contemporary critic Gordon Fletcher's review for Rolling Stone was negative, describing "The Rain Song" and "No Quarter" as mere vehicles to showcase Jones's use of Mellotron and synthesizer. In contrast, a retrospective review by Kristofer Lenz for Consequence of Sound was more favorable, rating the song as one of the most sentimental in Led Zeppelin's repertoire, highlighting its patient and beautiful arrangement. Lenz also noted that Plant's lyrics and vocals bring a sense of humanity, loss, and transcendence, reflecting emotional maturity.
