The story behind

The Power of Good-Bye, according to DoReSol

When you dive into *The Power of Good-Bye*, you encounter a ballad that envelops you. The instrumentation is key: there are acoustic guitars that set a gentle rhythm, almost like a whisper, but what truly captivates you are the strings that unfold, creating an immersive atmosphere. Added to all this is an electronic rhythmic base, with a pulse that invites you to move subtly. The lyrics, on the other hand, speak of that moment of liberation and strength that comes when closing a chapter in a relationship. It's one of those songs that, despite its delicacy, conveys a sense of empowerment.

The creation of *The Power of Good-Bye* occurred during a period of profound transformation for Madonna. Between 1996 and 1998, just before the album to which it belongs was released, she experienced events that changed her life perspective, including the birth of her daughter Lourdes and her interest in Eastern mysticism and Kabbalah. It was in this context that *Ray of Light*, the album that would reflect these new visions, was conceived. To compose, Madonna joined forces with collaborators like William Orbit and Patrick Leonard. Specifically, the lyrics for *The Power of Good-Bye* emerged from a collaboration with Rick Nowels. It is said that they met in New York, in the middle of a shopping trip, and that Nowels was impressed by the depth and intelligence of Madonna's lyrics, comparing her to artists of the caliber of Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon. From the sessions they shared, three songs ended up being part of the album: *The Power of Good-Bye*, *Little Star*, and *To Have and Not to Hold*. The song was released as the fourth single from the album on September 1, 1998.
