The story behind

Swim, according to DoReSol

The song Swim, which is part of the album Ray of Light, has a story behind it that gives it a special depth. Although the musical piece, lasting 5 minutes and 1 second, was written and produced by Madonna and William Orbit, it was based on a previous idea by Susannah Melvoin. What makes Swim particularly moving is the atmosphere that was created on the day Madonna recorded her vocals. On that same day, the tragic news of the murder of Gianni Versace, a close friend and important figure in her life, became known. The news impacted Madonna in such a way that her interpretation of the song acquired a somber and reflective tone, making it one of the most outstanding pieces on the album, even without having been released as a single.

This album, Ray of Light, released on February 22, 1998, by Maverick Records, represented a significant shift in Madonna's sound and aesthetic, distancing itself from her previous work, Bedtime Stories (1994). Ray of Light delves into genres such as electronic, trip hop, techno-pop, and new-age, fusing elements of ambient, house, rock, and classical music. The lyrics and music of the album reflect mystical themes, influenced by Madonna's interest in Kabbalah, her studies of Hinduism and Buddhism, and her daily practice of Ashtanga yoga. After the birth of her first daughter, Lourdes, Madonna began working on the album, initially with producers Babyface and Patrick Leonard, but upon not finding the desired direction, she opted for a different musical approach with William Orbit.
