The story behind
The song *That’s the Way* was recorded in a context of sonic experimentation, seeking to expand the boundaries of what the band could create. It was carried out in three different locations, with a significant part of the work taking place at Headley Grange, a country house, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. There were also additional sessions at Island Studios and Olympic Studios in London. As in previous works, the band members, Robert Plant on vocals, Jimmy Page on guitars, John Paul Jones on bass and keyboards, and John Bonham on drums, were responsible for all the instrumentation, without resorting to guest musicians. On this album in particular, the range of instruments used was notably expanded, with Jones standing out as a talented multi-instrumentalist, exploring various keyboards and strings, including synthesizers and mandolin. The total duration of the piece is 5:37.
The band, formed in 1968, was characterized by fusing elements from a wide spectrum of influences, from blues and rock and roll to soul, Celtic music, Indian music, folk, and even country. The producer of the recording was Peter Grant along with Jimmy Page, and the sound engineering was handled by Andy Johns and Terry Manning, with Andy Johns also doing the mixing. Although the band disbanded in 1980, their music continues to be widely disseminated and has notably influenced rock. To date, they have sold over 300 million albums worldwide.
