The story behind

Sueles dejarme solo, according to DoReSol

The first time Soda Stereo dared to experiment with such a raw and direct sound was with Sueles dejarme solo. This song, part of the 1990 album Canción Animal, stands out for its explosive energy, something unusual in their repertoire up to that point. It is described as the heaviest track in their entire career, featuring aggressive hard rock that culminates in a powerful guitar solo. During live performances, this solo was so intense that Gustavo Cerati ended up breaking his instrument on more than one occasion. The song’s structure begins with a slow electric guitar riff, to which layers of another guitar, drums, and the rest of the instruments are added. As it progresses, the intensity builds until it explodes into that unforgettable solo.

The origins of Sueles dejarme solo trace back to rehearsals for the Tango 3 project, a collaboration between Charly García, Pedro Aznar, and Gustavo Cerati. Although the project never came to fruition, it left behind the album Tango 4 and, unexpectedly, this song. The idea was born during a meeting between Cerati and Aznar. The lyrics, meanwhile, delve into a man’s sense of rejection when faced with a woman who expects something from him he cannot provide, as reflected in lines like “Nena, nunca voy a ser un superhombre, y sueles dejarme solo.” The band performed it live during the Gira Animal tour in 1990 and 1991, as well as during the farewell tour El último concierto in 1997, though these versions were never officially released on albums. Later, Gustavo Cerati included it in his solo repertoire, and the band revived it for the Me verás volver tour in 2007, this time officially recorded on CD2 of the Gira me verás volver album. Over the years, other artists have covered the song, such as Cabezones in 1999, and it appeared on the tribute album Gracias Totales, performed by Ave Murta and Plein. Even Ely Guerra added her own interpretation in 2002, produced by Andrés Levin.
