The story behind
Still of the Night, according to DoReSol
The song Still of the Night by Whitesnake stands out for its blend of blues rock influences and a powerful hard rock sound. Released on March 9, 1987, it reached position #16 in the UK and #18 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Its musical structure has an air that recalls classics by Led Zeppelin, especially in its bridge, where similarities to songs like "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid" can be noted. This mix of styles, along with the powerful vocals of David Coverdale and the guitar work of John Sykes, has made it one of the band’s most beloved songs.
The self-titled album, which includes Still of the Night, was recorded in several studios, such as Little Mountain in Vancouver and Compass Point in the Bahamas, under the production of Mike Stone and Keith Olsen. Despite its success, tensions within the band were palpable, and shortly after the recordings, Coverdale decided to fire Sykes. In 2009, the song was ranked as the 27th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1, reflecting its enduring impact on the genre. Additionally, in 2010, Finnish singer Tarja Turunen released a cover of the song for her album What Lies Beneath, demonstrating its influence on other artists.
