The story behind

Stayin’ Alive, according to DoReSol

The energy of Stayin’ Alive, with its unmistakable rhythm and that bassline that grabs you instantly, is something that resonates in a very particular way. When you listen to this song, it’s impossible not to think of that golden age of disco music, but there’s much more behind that vibe. The Gibb brothers, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, knew how to create a sound that became instantly recognizable. What’s interesting is how they achieved that distinctive three-part vocal harmony, which became their trademark. At first, Robin’s vibrato was what defined their early hits, but later it was Barry’s falsetto that shaped their sound for the late seventies and eighties, right around the time of Stayin’ Alive. They wrote and produced their own songs and also created hits for other artists.

The Bee Gees, born on the Isle of Man with roots in Chorlton, Manchester, England, began their musical journey in Australia in the late fifties. It wasn’t until 1967, after their first success in their home country with Spicks and Specks, that they returned to the United Kingdom. There, under the promotion of Robert Stigwood, their music began to reach a global audience. The album One Night Only, recorded live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 14, 1997, is a great example of their career, as it includes songs from several decades, from the sixties to the nineties. The DVD version of this concert is complete, while the CD omits some tracks, though a 1999 reissue added an extra disc with the missing songs. The cover of this album, both on CD and DVD, recreates the iconic pose from Saturday Night Fever, directly connecting with the image many have of them. The runtime of Stayin’ Alive is 4:45, and it was produced by the Bee Gees themselves alongside Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson.
