The story behind
The song Soul Rebel, with its duration of 3 minutes and 55 seconds, draws from the reggae and dub sound that characterizes UB40. The arrangement of this piece was handled by the band themselves, with production by Dan Armstrong, Danny Canaan, and UB40.
This English group emerged in Birmingham, England, back in 1978. The name, in fact, originates from a UK unemployment form. The members, childhood friends from the working class, united with a shared passion for music. In fact, they bought their first instruments with money from compensation received after an incident, and some of them were still learning to play. After recording a demo that was played on the radio and performing in venues, the band The Pretenders gave them an opportunity, inviting them to be opening acts on their 1979 tour. By 1980, UB40 released their first album, Signing off, and founded their own label, DEP International, with which they released Present Arms in Dub. The year 1983 marked a turning point with their version of Red Red Wine, a song popularized by Neil Diamond, included in the cover album Labour of Love, which brought them their first major success and catapulted them to fame. By 2010, the lineup remained active and undertaking international tours, despite their vocalist, Ali Campbell, having left the group in 2008 to form his own band.
